the space between^words
writing across the expanded field
the space between^words is an international collaborative network engaging with writing across the expanded field of art and performance – a field that includes artists working with textuality, visual and language poetry, digital, performance, theatre, film, music and dance. It aims not to service the writing community, but to empower artists to change the terms under which writing is practiced in conversation with, and as an informing element of, art and performance.
The project was initiated by Claire MacDonald profile^
Claire MacDonald initiated the space between^words in 2006 in order to research the encounter between art, writing and performance. She is Director of the International Centre for Fine Art Research, University of the Arts London, writes about visual art and performance and holds a PhD in Critical and Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia. She has just completed her first novel, ‘All that Remains’ and her current work for performance includes the new play ‘Correspondence,’ directed by Patrick Morris for Menagerie, and a new collaborative performance work with Charlotte Vincent of Vincent Dance.
She is a co-founding editor of the journal Performance Research, and a Contributing Editor of Performing Arts Journal.
in 2006 and began with research funded by Arts Council Yorkshire under the title ‘Writing in Context’. What emerged from the research was the desire to develop writing-led projects curated by artists for artists, that allow for deep connections between the work and the way we work – including hosting symposia and workshops, publishing work that wouldn’t otherwise get published, hosting conversations about the work and effecting studio and space exchanges, mentoring and dramaturgy.
the space between^words is radically inclusive and developing through a fluid membership of associate artists proposing and curating and running associate projects. What drives that radical inclusion is feminist method, which for us as curators is one of the most powerful and persuasive sources for collaboration, a philosophy that interrogates the past whilst proposing new, non-hierarchical methods of working in the present. It isn’t about exclusion: it’s about reconfiguring what inclusion might look like.
the space between^words is partnering with York St. John University to curate and produce Writing Encounters, a four-day symposium being held in York in September 2008, which will fully launch the space between^words. Information about Writing Encounters can be found here^ and in greater detail here^. Profiles of contributing artists can be found here^.
